BIG BIG WAVE

Hattiesburg, Mississippi. Not exactly the first city you would expect someone to mention when discussing their favorite cities for underground music, but here we are.
As an outsider, I first became aware of the majesty that the punk scene had in the land of Hattiesburg, MS on May 12, 2016. While driving a tour for Brazilian garage-rock trio THE PESSIMISTS, I had my first visit to this magical land and was instantly blown away. Growing up I felt at odds with the music scene in my hometown of Buffalo, NY and spent most weekends going to gigs an hour and a half south in the tiny town of Olean, NY. Having nothing but love and adoration for underdogs and hating the pretension that often comes with big-city music scene crumbums, I immediately felt at home in Hattiesburg. A small town full of weirdos getting along and working towards common goals. On top of all the reasons I could list about what I enjoy about small towns, the bands from this specific town were mind-blowing! The mighty BIG BLEACH played that evening and had me bopping around like an idiotic teenager. The moment their set ended I approached them with an idiotic idea. I proposed that if they were free for the rest of the night, I would lug my recording gear that I try to always travel with into the house where the gig just took place and we would all stay up the whole night recording a demo that I would like to release. To my surprise they were excited about such an idea and that ended up becoming the four song BIG BLEACH - ’Riffin’ With Biff’ cassette tape.
Hattiesburg had then became a staple tour stop for me, and even a locale worth going considerably out of the way to make it to while on the road. Feeling a kinship with a number of the cities residents and having a mutual love and desire to continue cranking out this grimy thing we call rock n’ roll, the harebrained schemes always seemed to spark and grow into flames when interacting with these fine folk. It seemed many of us wanted to push the limit of what we could achieve in the short time we had when we were occasionally together. After a few failed attempts for another kooky recording session, I was able to lock down PLEATHER, one of the bands formed from the ashes of BIG BLEACH, to record and release a 7”. While out on the road with SCIENCE MAN, the two of us found ourselves with a day off on tour a mere two-three hours from Hattiesburg. After planting the seed with the people involved we decided to make the drive, attend a house show where PLEATHER was playing and have them stay for a late-night session. There, into the wee hours of the night, with the help of John Toohill we set up and recorded what would be the vinyl debut for PLEATHER, their 7” single ‘Wasting Time with Riot’.
‘How could this possibly be topped?’, you may wonder. It’s wild enough to attempt to record a demo in one singular night, let alone something that planned to get pressed to vinyl. Well, that brings us to our BIG BIG PLAN:
Whenever I would end up spending time in Hattiesburg I would find myself impressed by another band I was previously unfamiliar with, so I started thinking of how to document as many of them as possible. The next time I would be in the area was on a tour for my solo project, NERVOUS TICK AND THE ZIPPER LIPS who was planning a two-week tour with the mighty SCIENCE MAN. A show was booked in Hattiesburg, but that wasn’t enough. An idea was presented to secure a location and have a backline of equipment set up that every band would use and try to crank through recording as many bands as Hattiesburg had to offer all in a single evening. I was fortunate enough to have one of my favorite modern recording engineers agree to be in my backing band for this tour and he was for some reason on board for making this idiotic idea a reality. Spooky John Angelo brought his superior recording rig on the trip and set things up recording band after band in this small practice space that the Hattiesburgers had reserved for the full day, which was located oddly enough right next to the landmark large pile of trash instantly recognizable from the PLEATHER record cover. While each band was doing their basic tracking, John Toohill and I set things up in the nearby bathroom, one mic in the stall and one mic by the urinal, to be able to record vocals for the bands as they finished their basic tracking and not slow down the process in the other room. In one single day we were able to record 1-2 tracks for a total of eleven bands, taking a break in the midst of it to drive across town and play a gig together with a few of the bands who had recorded.
And that, my friend is what you hold in your hands right now. Every track by every band recorded in that one fateful day. What is mind-boggling to me is that even in the amount of time to get the tracks mixed, mastered, figure out artwork, and get it into press, there are now even more killer bands from this city already popping up. Will there be a Vol. II? Only time will tell.
I have heard it said many times that touring the states in the modern day is a waste of time, but so long as there are cities with scenes like what has been happening in Hattiesburg, MS I will strongly oppose that viewpoint.

-Biff Bifaro

A HUGE thank you to every person involved in the Hattiesburg, MS underground music community for embracing me, making me feel welcome and like one of their own, and hopping on board with my kooky ideas. Also, huge thanks to all my ZIPPER LIPS from this tour for tolerating me and the wildly idiotic things like this I put us through while on the road all in the name of punk.

Think your city could possibly rival such a thing as this well-rounded comp? Well, you might just have to book one of our musical projects and get us down there to help you document it!
